Cross Border Association of Municipalities Lake Alqueva signed in Brussels the European convention of mayors to climate and energy.
The ATLA - Cross Border Association of Lake Alqueva Municipalities signed on 22 February European convention of mayors to climate and energy.
The ceremony "European Covenant of Mayors in 2018" was held in the European Parliament, in Brussels, and was attended by a delegation from the ATLA composed of the President of the association, José Calixto, by João Martins, responsible EDIA - Enterprise Development and Infrastructure of Alqueva for monitoring the work of the partnership between the two entities, and Marta Santos, the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz.
The ATLA was the first in Europe and only cross-border association to sign the convention, having been accompanied at the ceremony by the Portuguese MEPs Ricardo Serrao Santos and Carlos Zorrinho, by Commissioner Carlos coins and hundreds of European mayors, including Lisbon, Almada, Povoa de Varzim, Reguengos de Monsaraz and Guimarães. The Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, associated ATLA, also committed to this European convention representative of the local government strategy for the sustainability of the planet, allowing you to access and benefit from this new European Commission fund of about 16 billion in research and innovation, under the "Horizon 2020".
Jose Calixto considers that this ceremony "fits into a policy strategy since 2008 It brings together the community of municipalities and demonstrates the importance of local government in the development of integrated strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, transport or lighting, make greater use of renewable energy and strengthen measures to combat the climate risks. The president of ATLA also says that "this act, Mayors presented examples of how these achievements can be expanded to help meet or exceed the goals relating to energy policies and climate of the European Union, by the day 22 February 2018 It is thus marked as a very significant day for an important commitment of European local and regional towards the sustainability of the planet ".
The "Mayors Adapt" was released in March 2014, under the "Covenant of Mayors", focuses on adaptation measures to climate change and is the first initiative at European level launched to support cities, regions and local authorities in this kind of actions. In addition to supporting the overall objectives of the European Union's strategy for adapting to climate change, which aims to make Europe more weather resistant, cities and regions adhering to the "Mayors Adapt" accept prepare local adaptation strategies and integrate the actions developed or to be developed into action plans.
The ATLA - Cross Border Association of Municipalities Lake Alqueva was established in 2005 and it consists of the municipalities of Alandroal, Moura, Mourao, Portel, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Canyons, Viana do Alentejo, Vidigueira and Serpa, hair and municipalities in Alconchel, Cheles, Olivenza and Villanueva del Fresno.
