Olive oil: Portugal is the 6th largest producer in the world and the 3rd largest exporter in the European Union.

Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program promotes debate on social and cultural issues associated with the region's olive sector. The project led by Olivum, in partnership with the University of Évora, started last March.

Within the scope of the Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program (PSA) three debates have already been promoted that brought to the table relevant topics for the olive sector, which in recent years has reinforced and consolidated its role in the regional, National and international.

Portugal, after the campaign 2021, became the 6th largest producer of olive oil in the world and the 3rd largest exporter in the European Union. The growth of the olive sector, registered in recent years, is essentially due to the emergence of new irrigation areas – highlighting the example of Alqueva – which made it possible to install modern and efficient olive groves and the consequent installation of mills.

The Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program was born out of the need to solidify this growth, having as main objective to certify this product, demonstrating that it is produced sustainably and reinforcing its value. The certification is being developed with the technical and practical knowledge of the Southern Olive Growers Association (Olive tree), promoter, with the scientific and theoretical capital of the University of Évora, partner entity, and with the contribution of those on the ground, olive growers and olive oil producers, ensuring that it is a technically rigorous tool, and applicable on a practical level.

The Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program will continue to work on certification and recognition of the value of this product and the Alentejo region.
