The Beja Food Bank (BAB) was at risk of closing at the end of this year, if a solution was not found to solve the problem of lack of space in the warehouse that the institution has rented, for which you pay 400 EUR / month, in the city for several years.
The solution was overcome together with the Baixo Alentejo Intermunicipal Community (CIMB), which represents thirteen of the fourteen municipalities in the district, with the acquisition of a warehouse from a company from Bejense and the signing of a lending contract with the Associação Recolher e Dar, responsible for BAB in the region.
According to Lidador NotĂcias, (LN), and CIMBAL vai investir 300 thousand euros, and 250 thousand euros in the acquisition of space and more 50 thousand for the association to equip itself with a cold storage, essential to preserve certain collected foods that require refrigeration.
José Tadeu de Freitas, president of the Collect and Give Association and coordinator of the Food Bank, justified that “this is a process of final stabilization of the only Food Bank in the country that did not have its own or loaned facilities”, maintaining that the institution “was in danger of closing, if by the end of the year there was no alternative solution”, concluded.
“The new space should be ready for use in the middle of December and will be better equipped to develop support services for the most needy families in the district”, concluded the person responsible for BAB.
José Tadeu de Freitas is a man who has long been linked to work in the social and support sector, since between 2010 and 2019 was director of the Beja Delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross, initially having as its main mission the financial recovery and administrative reorganization with a view to maintaining it in operation, position he left after the termination of then president Francisco George, and for almost seven years he has been the president of the Collect and Give Association and coordinator of BAB.
It is worth remembering that this weekend another food collection campaign promoted by the Food Bank against Hunger is taking place nationwide., in which the Beja delegation will be committed.
