Beja: Meet the Air Base 11, 20 October, “Open base”.
A Base Aérea N.º 11, in Beja, opens the doors population, day 20 October, between 10H00 and 17H00, the celebrations of the 54th anniversary of the unit.

A Base Aérea N.º 11 – BA11 is located near the city of Beja, having been established in 1964 by Ordinance No. 20856 of 21 October, date came to be regarded as the “Unity Day”.
The base occupies an area of about 800 hectares and was built in order to meet the bilateral agreements between Portugal and Germany, in order to provide operational training facilities to the German Air Force.
Also belonging to the base and under the direct administration of the Command, but integrated in the urbanization of the southwest of the city of Beja, It is located a residential area made up of streets, parks, green areas and 330 housing, complemented by other social support facilities.
The establishment of the Command Unit and its services took place in 1967, keeping however the construction of infrastructure that came to end in 1968.
The unit began to be used by the German Air Force from 1970, year in which the F-104 aircraft began operating activities in Base, constituting a group of two stations, which were eventually taken to Germany 1973, due to changes in its military device.
From there, the BA11 worked as airfield support for military aircraft or the Portuguese Air Force wants the German Air Force and, yet, the commercial aircraft of Lufthansa and TAP, for training flights.
