Beja: Elect PS react to the situation of the Parish Union of Beja (Salvador and Feira).

Those elected from the Socialist Party in the Parish Assembly of the União de Freguesias de Beja (Salvador and Feira) issued a statement on the postponement of the election of the Executive.

Communiqué reproduced in full:

As a result of the installation session of the elected bodies of the Union of Parishes of Salvador and Santa Maria, in which the Socialist Party was the winning party, scheduled for the past day 14 October, and having been unable to choose, it was decided to schedule a new session for the next day 28 October, until then, seeking to overcome the existing difficulties and ensure the return to normal functioning of the Parish Council and the protection of the interests of our fellow citizens..

Considering this situation, which is considered anomalous and harmful to the regular exercise of the organs and activity of the parish, it is important - due to the duty of transparency and respect for all citizens - to clarify the following:

  1. PS was the most voted party, having the legitimacy of the voters' choice and the law in force, the obligation and responsibility to manage the destinations of the Union of parishes;
  2. PS victory, being recognizable by any citizen or entity, does not fail to reflect a minority governance situation, that the PS recognizes and assumes and that it makes it responsible for finding ways of dialogue and involving the participation of the other elected parties in the activity of the Parish Council, without this calling into question the legitimacy of governing;
  3. In this sense, the PS submitted two proposals for an agreement list, through the elected chairman of the board and as provided by law, with the criterion of electoral legitimacy for the governance of the executive: one with elements exclusively from its municipal application, another with elements of his candidacy and an element of another political force.
  4. The two proposals were rejected en bloc by all those elected from the other political forces, for what was proposed by the elected president, Antonio Ramos (PS), scheduling a new meeting, day 28 October, at 19:00, for the election of the respective bodies.

On the part of the Socialist Party and its elected representatives, the willingness to work towards a legitimate solution is once again manifested., stable and participatory, that honors democracy and voters' choice, sensitizing opposition parties to a serious reflection on the importance of making the Parish Council governable in defense of citizens' interests.

It is not up to the PS to make value judgments about the motivations, the consequences or outcome of an eventual agreement between the elected representatives of all other political forces.

The Socialist Party and its elected representatives have the responsibility and duty to govern according to the voters' choice and in favor of all citizens, no exception.
