GNR: Created the Emergency Unit of Protection and Rescue which succeeds the GIPS.
It was published today in the Official Gazette the Decree-Law No. 113/2018, which enters into force tomorrow, establishing the Emergency Unit of Protection and Rescue (UEPS), which succeeds the Protection and Intervention Group Relief (GIPS).
The Protection and Rescue Intervention Group (GIPS) It was created in 2 February 2006, the organic part of the National Guard (GNR) and the General Command of the dependence of GNR, with the specific mission to perform preventive actions and first-line intervention, throughout the national territory.
The GIPS started its operating activities in the first quarter of 2006, having been left with the responsibility of executing the initial attack in helitransportado 5 districts (Vila Real, Viseu, Coimbra, Leiria and Faro).
In 2007 They were assigned to the GIPS responsibility more 4 districts (Viana do Castelo, Braga, Oporto and Aveiro), and the following year, in 2008, two districts (Bragança and Lisbon), staying, since then, with responsibility for ensuring the initial attack in helitransportado 11 of 18 districts of continental Portugal.
The ordinance creates, adding to existing specialized units Emergency Unit of Protection and Rescue (UEPS), and the internal organization, groups and subunits and LIFO company are defined by order of the Government member, with the organization of the platoon echelon subunits is set by order of the commanding general. The LIFO is commanded by a Major General, assisted by a 2 commander, with the rank of colonel.
