Odemira: Celebration of 50 years of the Santa Clara Dam.


The Secretary of State for Regional Development, Maria do Céu Albuquerque, will preside over the commemorative ceremony 50 years of the Santa Clara Dam, inside the Odemira, which will be held tomorrow (Saturday) by 15.00 hours, next to Dam.

Between the days 10 and 12 May, Friday to Sunday, the municipality of Odemira and Mira Beneficiaries Association will promote a program of activities open to the entire community, that besides the evocative ceremony, It includes exhibitions, concertos, actions directed at the public school and sports activities, with free entries.

The Santa Clara Dam is the largest public work of Odemira, structuring for the region, aimed at two important valences: water supply for irrigation and public supply. The total capacity 485.000.000 m3, and the area flooded by the reservoir of 1986 hectares, corresponding to a perimeter 242 Km. From Santa Clara are benefited 12.000 Mira hectares in the Irrigation Perimeter.

Under the Alentejo Irrigation Plan, launched in 1957, They were awarded some work in 1962, including the dam of Rio Mira. The dam was inaugurated on 11 May 1969, with the presence of the President, Admiral Américo Thomaz, and the President of the Council of Ministers, Marcello Caetano, as well as of the entire government, regional and national and thousands of popular organizations.

Three days of celebration in Santa Clara-a-Velha
On the morning of day 10 May, in Santa Clara Dam, activities will be dedicated to the school community, with environmental promotion actions, visit to the dam facilities, energy on experiences, murals and introduction to canoeing.
