Local: Elections are 1 October.


The Government marked Thursday the local elections for the next day 1 October, He announced the Minister of the Presidency, Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, after the meeting of the Cabinet.

“The Council of Ministers fixed the date of 01 October 2017 for the holding of general elections for representative bodies of local authorities”, He announced the Minister at the press conference following the meeting.

This week, the prime minister, António Costa, He received the parties with parliamentary representation, and the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) and the National Association of Parishes (ANAFRE) on the date of the local elections, having all advocated that local elections should be held on 01 October.

According to the Electoral Law of the Organs of Local Government, the date of the local government is marked by government decree, at least, 80 days in advance.

Under the law, elections must be held between the days 22 September and 14 October and will have to fall on a Sunday or national holiday.

In 2013, the previous government marked the 13 June elections for 29 of September.
