Or Alentejo historian, researcher at the Archaeological Field of Mértola and former mayor of Moura, takes office today as director of the National Pantheon, in Lisbon.
Natural of Moura, Santiago Macias, was one of eight candidates for the position, in an international competition promoted by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), who made the announcement last day 25 Feb., taking office on this day 1 April, known as “April Fool”, but that is actually a reality.
Within the framework of the new legal regime for the management of DGPC monuments, directors are now recruited through public tenders, for three-year service fees, with the maximum ten year limitation.
Santiago Macias, has 57 year old, was president of the autarchy of “Salúquia city” between 2013 and 2017, holds a PhD in History from the University of Lyon, in 2005, specialized teacher of the Masters Course in Heritage at the Faculty of Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with extensive experience in museology, curatorship of exhibitions and coordination of publications.
Along with the contest for director of the National Pantheon, the Alentejo historian is one of the twelve candidates admitted to the competition for director of the Rainha D. Leonor Regional Museum, in Beja, which is part of the Ministry of Culture's museum network, involving a partnership between the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, in a shared management with the City Council of the city of bejense.
