In the initiative, under the motto “Our end is your hunger”, the recently formed Civil Movement for Agriculture participates, which presents itself as “a civil and non-partisan movement that unites farmers and civil society in defense of the primary sector”.
In a document released today, the movement details that, a partir the 8 Day hours 1 Feb., “farmers go to Portuguese stays with agricultural machines and other heavy vehicles to fight for the human right to adequate food, for fair conditions and the valorization of the activity”, inviting civil society to join the cause. “Portuguese farmers are united and prepared to defend themselves from tyranny and permanent attack on sustainability, food sovereignty and rural life”, can be read in the note.
The Civil Movement for Agriculture urges the authority to implement several measures with immediate effect, including: a supplement for young farmers and other production support, particularly cereal crops, in order to reduce the need for imports; crop insurance “with more realistic values”; reduction of taxes on colored diesel; and promotion of grazing by increasing the value of animals under extensive conditions in relation to those stabled. Among other demands, Farmers also call for the implementation of the Mercosur agreement in the European Union and the renegotiation of the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan.
Farmers prepare roadblocks in Portugal, from tomorrow morning.
Large incidences are expected on the main Alentejo borders, namely in Caia (Elvas-Badajoz), Retirement (Campo Maior), Marvão-Valência de Alcântara, Mourão and Vila Verde de Ficalho-Rosal de la Frontera.
Blockades are planned at the main borders, but also in smaller passages, a partir the 2 the morning. In the Trás-os-Montes region, the plan is to block all borders and, no Minho, the Valença border is expected to be cut. In the Beiras, it is planned to block the Vilar Formoso border and other small borders along the Beira border.
No Alentejo, farmers must move to the borders of Caia, in Elvas county, and the Retreat, near Badajoz, as well as to Olivença, Mourao and Ficalho (Baixo Alentejo). no Algarve, the plan is to block Castro Marim and, in Alcácer do Sal, farmers plan to cut the A2 and move towards Pegões. In Ribatejo, the A2 is being cut, towards Lisbon-Porto. And in Montemor, there is a view to blocking the A6 at the Montemor interchange and the road that goes to Sines, to cut off access to the port.
