Will move forward, this first semester, the new environmental recovery project of the former mining area of Aljustrel, in an investment of 4,8 million.
The project was presented at Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel, by Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro S.A. (EDM), responsible for the project and work, to the Secretary of State for Energy and the Municipality of Aljustrel.
This is a complementary phase to the hydrological-environmental rehabilitation that has already been carried out previously in different interventions and which allowed, in different periods, rehabilitate the old Algares area.
This new venture will be supported by the Alentejo Regional Program (Alentejo 2030) and falls within the scope of the notice provided for “Environmental liabilities – environmental remediation of former abandoned mining areas”.
The intervention includes the confinement of 350.000 m³ of contaminated soil and the coating of an area of approximately 120.000 m² of exposed waste.
The renaturalization of a large area of unsuitable soil and the modeling of areas with topographical deficiencies will also be carried out., as well as the construction of auxiliary and complementary rainwater drainage lines.
The undertaking will focus, yet, in strengthening the riparian gallery, in strengthening and preserving the mining archaeological heritage and in the recovery of the Algares mining area from an environmental and landscape point of view.
These interventions will also include the collection of leached sub-surface waters resulting from percolation through the base of the heap., as well as referral to a control point and subsequent transportation for treatment.
It is worth remembering that it was these interventions that allowed the creation of the so-called Aljustrel Mining Park, putting a new end to abandoned mining areas, taking care of environmental issues and preserving the heritage structures resulting from mining activities present in the territory.
