The economic impact assessment study of the implementation of the multiple purposes of Alqueva (EFMA) will be presented next day 25 March, at 15:00, in the auditorium of edia, in Beja.
It is an event that will be attended by the Minister of State and Finance, Doctor Joaquim Miranda Sarmento and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, José Manuel Fernandes.
It is recalled that last Tuesday at a presentation session of the “Ãgua that unites†strategy, that took place at the headquarters of ACOS-AGRULTORS DO SUL, in Beja, José Manuel Fernandes left the message that “Alqueva is the self -europa of agriculture. Yields to the state 339 Millions of euros in tax revenue â€, reinforcing the importance that agricultural life around the large dam has in the national economy.
The Multiple Enterprise of Alqueva (EFMA) based on the concept of multiple purposes and the integrated management of your strategic water reserve, presenting as a structuring project in southern Portugal and an anchor investment in Alentejo, whose main purpose is to enable and promote regional development in their economic aspects, environmental and social.
The valences of the project are not only concentrated in agriculture, currently with an area in exploration of 130 000 hectares, but also in public water supply, in the production of hydroelectric energy in reversible mode, complemented by land and floating photovoltaic centrals, in the development of tourist activities and the preservation of the territory and the environment.
The study to present, aims to understand the structuring effects of the implementation of EFMA on the local and national economy, analyzing the benefits generated holistically, considering the different phases of the project and the multidimensional effects resulting from their nature of multiple purposes.
For this, both the autonomous impacts of EFMA were captured, from its construction and exploitation, as the catalyzed impacts, arising from the viability of economic activities in the main beneficiary sectors - agricultural, Agroindustrial, Tourism and Energy -, covering your area of ​​influence, including 23 municipalities, of the districts of Beja, Évora, Setúbal and Portalegre.
It is pointed out that EFMA has an important contribution to major national challenges and objectives to the sustained reduction of non-renewable energy consumption and transition to a low carbon economy, through the production of hydroelectric and solar energy. Besides, supports the modernization of the agricultural sector, job creation, Tourism and the fixation of young farmers, reinforcing integrated water and energy management and aligning with various national strategies.
Analysis of the economic impact of EFMA activity, namely regarding the impact on tax revenue, contributes to another analysis, efficiency of the application of public financing, through which it can be said that today EFMA has already guaranteed a financial return (SIMPLE INVESTMENT RECOVERY, i.e., not updated by inflation and/or weighted the opportunity cost) for the state superior to the resources invested.
The study also points out challenges for the future of EFMA, as the need for balance in water management, Improvements in infrastructure for tourism and solutions for labor shortages.
