Alqueva: Rains in Spain lead to the opening of dams.

The rain that continues to fall incessantly in Extremadura of Spain, there are places where it was higher than 100 liters per square meter, causes water to pass through “Badajoz weir” to fill Alqueva.

The heavy rains that fell in Extremadura of Spain, namely in the province of Badajoz, are already leading to the opening of the dams and the water flowing through the “Açude de Badajoz” to the Alqueva Dam.

North of Badajoz and Campo Maior, to barragem of Villar del Rey, started pouring water. According to the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation, that basin has 104% its capacity and the water is coming out of the spillway.

In terms of taking into account the 13,00 hours of the “Açude de Badajoz” were passing 500m3 per second and the tendency is to increase throughout the day (to 15,20 hours pass 1.200 m3 per second), in view of the discharges that may occur in other Spanish reservoirs.´

To 08,00 this Tuesday, the Alqueva Dam was at quota 145,48 meters, a 6,44 meters of its total capacity, which is found in 152 meters. In albufeira he housed 2.765,95 hm3 cubic of water (2.765.950.000 m3), 67,20% of its total capacity, which is 4.150 hm3 (4.150.000.000 m3).

If it continues to rain with this intensity in Spain and the entry through the “Açude de Badajoz” continues to increase, it is believable that by the end of December the Alqueva Dam could be completely filled, which would be the fifth time in its history, after the first fill in 12 January 2010.
