The Great Lake Alqueva, Alentejo, will have two new river beaches later this summer – one in the municipality of Alandroal and another in the municipality of Portel. Both already have planned dates for opening to the public.
after Monsaraz, of Mourão and Amieira (Portel), it is the turn of the municipality of Alandroal to announce what will be the new river beach of the great Alqueva lake, Alentejo. As confirmed to Evasões João Grilo, President of the Municipality of Alandroal, the works on the new infrastructure should start “by the end of March” and the forecast is that, “running all right”, the beach can open to the public “in August”.
The river beach of Azenhas D’El Rei will be born in the town of Monte Juntos, in the parish of Capelins – Santo António, in the municipality of Alandroal. “It will be a beach along the lines of those that already exist in Alqueva, with a set of solutions and accessibility”, explained the president. There will be a restaurant-bar with a terrace, parking lot, children's play area, surveillance and access for people with reduced mobility.
The bathing area must also be equipped with parking for buses and motorhomes.. In the water, will have an access ramp for boats and an anchorage to facilitate the practice of water sports (very popular in the region). Another attraction will be the proximity to the beach of Cheles, on the spanish side, so it will be a beach “not only for residents, but also for visitors”.
To João Cricket, “it is very important for the dynamics of the region to create this playful offer, because it consolidates the destiny”. “We noticed that people looking to do tourism in Alentejo also like to have contact with the water and the Alqueva offers this possibility”. The Azenhas D’El Rei river beach project will cost close to 700 thousand euros, 300 thousand of which financed by Turismo de Portugal.
Beach in the village of Alqueva scheduled for the beginning of the bathing season
Summer should bring two new seaside resorts to Alqueva. Beyond the beach of Azenhas D’El Rei, the river beach of the village of Alqueva is in the process of completion, which gave its name to the largest artificial lake in Europe. According to Evasões, it found with the Portel presidency office, the beach layout has already been completed and the rest of the structures need to be assembled, such as the support restaurant-bar and walkways, as well as the accesses.
The opening forecast, at this time, is the start date of the bathing season, which usually is 15 June, said the source. Located about a kilometer and a half from the village of Alqueva, this will be the second river beach in the municipality of Portel and will have a “smaller” sand than that of Amieira, but at least 100 meters of guarded beach”, as stated at the time by the mayor José Manuel Grilo.
In Alqueva – one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, with a reservoir of 250 square kilometers and covering five municipalities in the Alentejo – there are so far three river beaches. The first opened in Reguengos de Monsaraz, in 2017, the second in Mourão and the third in Amieira (Portel). the future beaches, whose position in the “ranking” depends on the opening dates, will be those of Alqueva and Azenhas D'El Rei.
