Local: It fulfilled today 40 years of the first elections to the “Local power”.


In this day 12 December 2016 is fulfilled the 40th anniversary of the First Local Elections in Portugal, symbolic date which instituted the Local Democratic Power with constitutionally enshrined autonomy, with its own powers and bodies elected by mandate, by popular vote.

1976-autarquicas_800x800The Portuguese local elections 1976 They were performed 12 from December. Were the first elections to elect local authorities, after, the Carnation Revolution. These elections were elected 304 municipal mayors, 5135 municipal representatives and, search, of 26 thousand deputies to the parish assemblies.

The results of these elections were won by the PS, that could, next to 33% of the vote, despite, have tied with the PSD in number of mayors: 115. Importantly, also, abstention, which was around 35%, high number, taking into account, what, in legislative elections 1976, abstention was, approximately, 16%.

No district Beja, the Electoral Front United People, got 45.842 votes, 47,25 %, elected 9 mayors (Aljustrel: António Raposo, Canyons: Carlos Durão, Beja: Jose Colaco, Castro Verde: Fernando Caeiros, Cuba: Francisco Rodrigues, Ferreira do Alentejo: Joseph Plum, Mértola: Serrao Antonio Martins, Odemira: Justino dos Santos and Serpa: Satiro Louzeiro) and 39 aldermen.

O Socialist Party, reached 38.011 votes, 39,18%, electing 4 presidents (Almodovar: Carlos Gago, Alvito: Joaquim Cabanas, Moura: Armando Manso and Vidigueira: Manuel Reis) and 35 councilors and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), reached 3.254 votes, 3,35 %, achieving a presidency chamber (Ourique: Ramiro Vilhena) and 4 aldermen.

Competed yet Social Democratic Centre (CDS), GDs of Popular Unity and the Communist Party of Portugal (Marxist-Leninist), who failed to win any authority or elected councilors.
