Aviation: Beja Airport for commercial flights? Air Force is against, here's the explanation.

There are mainly private jets landing at Beja airport. Most passengers come from the USA, France and United Kingdom. But for when commercial flights? The Air Force does not agree and NATO comes to justify it.

There are more and more private flights at Beja airport, but commercial aviation will remain reduced. SIC knows that the Air Force argued with the technical committee that the airport cannot be used for regular charters.

In 2021 arrived at Beja airport 221 aircraft. The value rose to 302 in 2022.

They are mainly private jets and SIC knows that this is how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle landed in Beja recently, before continuing to Melides.

On ‘premium’ flights, most passengers come from the USA, France and United Kingdom. They are swapping Tires for Beja because of the peace and proximity to the beaches and luxury developments on the Alentejo coast.

SIC tried to understand why, when there are no vacancies at Lisbon airport, Beja is no longer used. The airport director, Maurício Nunes, refused to be interviewed. The president of the Chamber points the finger at airlines.

According to what SIC found, the Air Force argued with the independent technical commission that this airport cannot be used for regular commercial aviation. This is because the NATO base uses the runway for military exercises.

This is also why the commission recommends to the Government greater use – to relieve Lisbon and Faro – but only for cargo and non-scheduled charters.

From Beja to Lisbon it is two hours away… by train

The report further concludes that, because of the lack of access, Beja cannot be an alternative. To Lisbon the train takes more than two hours and if the destination is the Algarve it can be five hours away.
