Beja: 22nd edition of the Book Fair – Solstice of Words, of 19 a 25 June.


The activities will take place in various spaces in the city center – Portas de Mértola, Terreiro dos Valentes, Cod Garden, Municipal Library of Beja José Saramago, Beja UNESCO Center, Pax Julia Teatro Municipal with several music shows, staged readings and short stories.

The program highlights the writers Ondjaki, José Eduardo Agualusa, Rafael Gallo, and the celebration of Natália Correia's centenaries, Urbano Tavares Rodrigues and Mário Cesariny. The Literary Lives of Nuno Nepomuceno will be celebrated, Ana Cristina Silva, António Bagão Felix, Ana Paula Figueira and Joseia Matos Mira. There will be gatherings with poets Andreia Faria and André Osório, a discussion on translation with Gilda Encarnação and the presentation of the Mariana Alcoforado Literary Guide, with Marta Easter and António Cunha.

Moderating these conversations will be José Mário Silva, Maria Flor Pedroso, Ricardo Viel, Elsa Ligeiro, Martinho Marques, Miguel Cardoso Pereira, Carlos Almeida and Leonardo Freitas.

The program for this edition features several partnerships. AT SETTLE – Alentejo Writers Association, with the launch of the 4th edition of the Joaquim Mestre Prize, on 21, and gatherings with more than 20 authors and creators from the region. A DGLAB – General Book Directorate, Archives and Libraries, with a seminar on Libraries and the 2030/SDG Agenda, on 19 and a meeting of digital influencers, on 24. The José Saramago Foundation, with a session to publicize the Universal Charter of the Duties and Obligations of Human Beings, on 24.

Activities for parents and children and for school groups, take place in Jardim do Bacalhau and in the Municipal Library between 19 and 25, counting on 12 reading mediators, which includes reading mediators from the Beja region.

The spoken and sung word will be celebrated between 19 and 25 June, with several shows where music will take place, staged readings and stories.

Between 21 and 25 June in the city's pedestrian center – Portas de Mértola – the Book Market will take place, where books from more than 70 editorial stamps, a space with books at low prices and Espaço ASSESTA – with books from over 80 authors from the region, that you can meet at autograph sessions on the days 24 and 25 June. There you can also find artisans from the region, at the Urban Market and discover the surprises that appear in every corner of the book market.

The following exhibitions will be on display: The most beautiful end of the world (José Eduardo Agualusa, URUCUM curated); Women and resistance – New Portuguese Letters and other struggles (Org. Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom); This silence that is heard and written (IP2N4-Art Movement); The hands (Nazareth); Azul (Sell ​​Palma). Three of them are from breeders in the region.

The Book Fair is an organization of Beja City Council in partnership with ASSESTA – Alentejo Writers Association, DGLAB – General Book Directorate, of Archives and Libraries and the José Saramago Foundation, and has the institutional support of DRCulturaAlentejo.

On 21 June, date on which the 149th anniversary is celebrated (21 June 1874) from the Municipal Library of Beja, will take place at Terreiro dos Valentes, at 17:00, the official opening of this 2nd edition of the Book Fair.
