Beja: Aircraft that crashed during air festival, and caused the death of the pilot, remains in place.

One month after the accident that led to the death of a Spanish pilot during the Beja Air Show, prosecutors (MP) de Beja has not yet allowed the removal of the wreckage of the plane from the place where it crashed.

Warbird Yak52s left, that killed Spanish pilot Manuel Rey Cordeiro, of 62 year old, continues on land attached to the Beja Civil Terminal (TCB), where it fell last day 2 June.

Has learned the Lidador News (LN), with a source from the Public Security Police (PSP) Beja, justified that “we have instructions from the MP to preserve the wreckage, because there is an investigation by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF)” adding that the MP questioned the GPIAAF about the fate of the aircraft’s wreckage “and the latter dismissed responsibility”, concluded. The wreckage is in a TCB administration area, fenced by a wire and “whenever it is necessary for someone to access, duly authorized by the MP, PSP monitors it”, revealed our source.

Remember that the accident occurred 2 June, when at 4:05 pm two aircraft from the Yakstars aerobatic patrol collided in mid-flight. As LN revealed at the time, “Coco” as the Galician pilot was known, crashed its tail into the propeller of another plane from the same patrol, having in the descending phase of the aircraft crash, jumped from the device, which does not have automatic injection of the flight seats, with the body of the ill-fated pilot lying on top of the barbed wire fence of the military unit, being completely dismembered. The parachute opened only after the violent impact of the net.

The day after the accident, the GPIAAF in conjunction with the Air Force, given that the festival was organized and in the airspace controlled by this branch, carried out an inspection of the two aircraft involved in the same. This day, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) announced that the MP “opened an investigation to investigate the circumstances in which the accident occurred, and which resulted in one death and one minor injury”, with the PGR not providing further details.

In informative note (IN) released two days after the investigation began, the GPIAAF justified that Manuel Rey Cordeiro, known as “Coco”, “jumped out of the plane after the collision and tried to open the parachute, but given the low altitude the equipment did not open”,

According to GPIAAF “the pilot started the final sequence without maintaining separation from the group, having collided with another aircraft, which caused damage that led to the inevitable loss of control of the aircraft and the inverted position of the crash caused a violent collision with the ground with subsequent explosion”.

NI added that “the pilot left the aircraft in flight, Given the low height, the equipment did not open, there was no slowdown, resulting in immediate death.”, justify GPIAAF inspectors.

Finally, the GPIAAF NI clarified that “the investigation is independent and distinct from any judicial or administrative processes that aim to determine blame or attribute responsibility”, I concluded.

LN questioned the Beja MP and the PGR about the reasons why the aircraft remained in place a month later, but no explanations were given.
