Beja: Damaged fire-fighting ladder leaves district without help.

The repair costs 60 thousand euros and the association has already informed several entities that it does not have the funds to carry it out. The district does not have a self-ladder and the firefighters of Évora have to be called, Faro or Setúbal.

The Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Beja informed the League of Portuguese Firefighters (LBP) and other entities, namely the City Council and the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), that your self-ladder (AE) is broken and does not have the 60 thousand euros that its repair entails.

On your social media page, the Portuguese Fire Brigade “deplores the fact and warns of the urgency of repair”, taking into account that “it is a unique vehicle in the region”, justify (in the photo in the fire of the Silos of the Cooperativa de Beja, on 11 September 2021).

However, the thirteen municipalities of the district of Beja are deprived of this fundamental tool, having as an alternative, Beja Volunteers who seek help from the Évora Fire Brigade, or from further away, from Faro or Setúbal.

AE de Beja is owned by the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Beja and was acquired with the support of the then National Fire Service (SNB) and the municipality. This tool belongs to a batch of 40 for which the then SNB competed as well as many city councils in the financial support of the acquisition.

Recently, the LBP has once again drawn the attention of the Government to the need to meet the deadlines for vehicle revisions. The case of Beja is a first, but everything indicates that, doing nothing for its regular maintenance, the breakdowns will happen and the safety of the populations will be at stake.

According to the League, “The Beja Firefighters await a response from the Intermunicipal Community of Baixo Alentejo, whom the Municipality of Beja turned to in order to obtain some support for the repair of the vehicle”, remataram.
