The Portuguese Red Cross-Delegation of Beja (CVP-DB) already contacted the Cruz Martins family about Carmelo, to find out if the institution's activity fits the ideas of the heirs, in the case of land and building reversion.
After the news released by Lidador NotĂcias (LN) about the desire of the heirs of Maria Benedita and Francisco Cruz Martins, in which 1963 donated the land and paid for part of the construction of the monastery where Carmelo do Sagrado Coração de Jesus was built, Beja, a CVP-DB official spoke with Francisco, one of the couple's children to show interest in the facilities.
Beja's Red Cross source revealed to JN that "from the first conversation, we noticed that there is an opening for the eventual installation of two Residential Structures for the Elderly (ERPI’s), for fitting into the social spirit that the family intends to give to Carmelo, in case the Carmelite Sisters do not return and after consummating the reservation”.
The same source added that CVP-DB's main concern "is to provide good living conditions to its users. The facilities in the Historic Center are not being a space with much dignity”, We concluded our interlocutor.
It is recalled that last day 19 October, the LN revealed the words of warned Francisco Cruz Martins, who left the notice: “either the Carmelite sisters return or the Church returns Carmel to our family. Either they do it for good or they do it in court.”, justified Francisco Cruz Martins, which was adamant when recalling the deed dated 21 November 1963 which refers to a “pure and irrevocable donation to the Carmelite Sisters of the Ancient Carmel Observance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”, adding the family “wants and will fulfill my parents’ plans”, held.
Having as justification “the lack of sisters” in the Carmelite Community, the Diocese “executed” in 22 October 2019 the suppression decree signed by D.José Rodriguez Carballo, a 12 July, In Rome. Last day 27 September 2022, with the departure of the last two Carmelite Sisters, Magdalena and Luisa, the doors of space has been closed. On the morning of the past day 13, the gates of Carmel appeared littered with papers in protest against the closure of the religious space. In the posted messages you could, and still can, read that “it was closed by the will and decision of the Holy See. The Christian community and friends of Carmel are outraged and ask for the reopening”.
