Beja: EMAS involved in various awareness fronts and work.


The EMAS Beja joined the European Week for Waste Reduction within the campaign "Tap Water If It Please", celebrated World Sanitation Day and collaborated in Cross Country District School Sports.

Between the days 17 and 25 November will take place the 10th edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), aiming to raise awareness of the problem of waste, focusing on prevention.

The EMAS Beja joined this initiative under the campaign "Tap Water If It Please", and in the day 19 November, come to Beja and exchanged plastic water bottles of glass bottles, strengthening environmental commitment to changing attitudes.

Aware of its important role in promoting sustainable development, purpose of this action was to promote the consumption of tap water, an excellent quality of water, and reduction potentiate the production of plastic bottles for single use.

It is understood that in Portugal produced about 370 tons of plastic per year, on average 31kg per person. The plastic currently represents a danger to the oceans and it becomes essential to protect the environment by reducing marine litter. In 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.
On 19 November was celebrated the World Sanitation Day, a date that was aimed at sensitizing the world's population to the global sanitation challenges.
Despite progress in recent years, there are still thousands of people in the world without access to basic sanitation and hygiene services.
Despite our different reality, it never hurts to recall some examples of good practice.

EMAS Beja collaborated in Cross Country District School Sports held on 22 November in Beja, through the promotion and supply of water to the participants.

A iniciativa, which had the support of several entities, including the city of Beja, with the participation of approximately 1300 athletes.

The tap water supply from public distribution of Beja county, a high quality water, in biodegradable cups at the finish, reduced the consumption of plastic waste generated in such initiatives, by using bulk single-use bottled water.

Gradually the various entities will become aware of the need for environmental change habits, fact that EMAS Beja praises and within their responsibility is to make available part of this necessary process of change, the good and the protection of ecosystems.
