Beja: Tried for attempted murder of man who was mistaken for a police officer.


A youngster, of 21 year old, It begins today to be prosecuted in the Court of Beja, accused of material authorship and in the attempted form, of a crime of qualified homicide, committed against a man who “considered he was a member of a police agency”.

The crime occurred in the early hours of 2 July of last year, cerca the 00,50 hours, behind the Administrative and Fiscal Court (TAF) Beja, “in the middle of a public street, in a context of gratuitous violence”, as the PJ revealed at the time, who would arrest the individual two days after the attack.

According to the order for prosecution, the defendant resident in Beja, got into an argument with the victim, a man of 27 year old, who attacked with the use of a bladed weapon, striking him in the abdomen. The injuries caused “required urgent surgical intervention, that if it wasn't timely, the injuries inflicted by the defendant would have caused the death of the offended party.”, justified the PJ.

Heard in the first interrogation by a Criminal Investigation Judge of the Beja Court, the individual was placed in preventive detention, currently at the Leiria Prison Establishment. The defense appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal of Évora (THREE), defending the change of the coercive measure to house arrest subject to electronic surveillance, but the TRE Judges refused “in view of the extreme gravity of the acts carried out”.

Convicted in another case

On 11 November 2023, when he was already in pre-trial detention, was tried and sentenced to 18 months in prison for committing a minor drug trafficking crime. When a year earlier he was approached by PSP agents from Beja,, the defendant had in his possession 88,43 grams of cannabis, a pocket knife with the total length of 21 centimeters (cm) and 9,5 cm of blade and a bundle of notes worth a total of 1.320 euros.
