Former mayor of Beja José Manuel Carreira Marques died this Friday, to 77 year old, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit of Évora.
the former president, that had “kidney and diabetes problems”, was hospitalized “about a week ago”, at the Évora hospital unit, ending up dying this morning, victim of “cardiac arrest”.
Born in Falagueira, in the municipality of Amadora (Lisbon), Jose Manuel Carreira Marques, accountant by profession, was elected to the Chamber of Beja, for the first time, in elections 1982 and took office in January 1983, presiding over the municipality until 2005, always elected by coalitions led by the PCP.
Before being mayor, career Marques, who has lived in Beja since the 15 year old, was elected deputy for the PCP in the first Constituent Assembly and was later a member of the party in the Assembly of the Republic for the circle of Beja, between 1976 and 1982.
During his time in the Assembly of the Republic, was also part of the Portuguese parliamentary committee in the Council of Europe.
Militant do PCP from 1974, Career Marques was also one of the “faces” in the Alentejo of the Communist Renewal Movement.
Chaired the Supervisory Board of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, between 1986 and 1989.
The politician was a member of the General Council of the Beja Airport Development Company, linked to the creation of the current Beja Airport, was a member of the Alqueva Infrastructure Environmental Monitoring Committee and chaired the Beja District Assembly, among other positions throughout the career.
After having left the municipality of the Alentejo district capital, in October 2005, served as president of the administration and executive director of the Regional Conservatory of Baixo Alentejo, based in Beja, between September 2009 and October 2010.
Former editor of the defunct newspaper “the peasant”, Carreira Marques collaborated with several local media and was also the author of chronicles and poetry books..
