The Municipality of Beja, through its José Saramago Municipal Library, starts a new reading and literary tourism project called Mini Biblioteca Pax Julia.
The first phase of execution of this project begins on Friday, day 17 January, with the delivery of the first 12 Mini Libraries at city hotels.
Traditional Alentejo wicker baskets, handcrafted, will be the physical support for the 28 books to be delivered to each hotel. The works are related to the region, in particular with the city and municipality of Beja, including books by local authors, edited or supported by the Municipality of Beja.
Each of the Mini Libraries will provide four literary itineraries, edited in 2023, about authors and literary figures from Beja: Mario Beirão, Mariana Alcoforado, AlMum´tamid and Manuel Ribeiro, with Portuguese versions, English, French and Spanish, and also the two books about Jorge Vieira, edited in 2022 by the municipality on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of this artist. Of the literary authors, works by Martinho Marques stand out, Maria Isabel Covas Lima, Joaquim Mosca, Maria do Rosário Carvalhal, Francisco Vaz, Mariana Margarida and Rosa Helena Moita.
The Mayor of Beja, Paul Arsenio, will personally deliver the Mini Libraries the next day 17 January, in action that starts at 5:30 pm and will include visits to the Hotel Santa Bárbara, Hotel Bejense, in the morning and until about noon, Hotel Francis, Better hotel, Beja Parque Hotel and Holiday Inn.
In addition to these hotels, also joined the initiative, this first phase, some local accommodation, namely, Maria´s Guesthouse, Guesthouse Stories, Dona Maria Guesthouse, Aljana Guesthouse and the Youth Hostel.
The Pax Julia Mini Library will become a resource that participating hotels will make available to their customers, which will contribute to the promotion of Beja and the region, through books and reading.
