Beja: Active pigeon population control program during 8 months, costs 14 thousand euros.


The Municipality of Beja started a program to control the population of the so-called “city pigeons”, to reduce the number of birds, mitigate sources of pollution and damage to buildings.

The capture actions include the use of retention cages, I use birds of prey, placement of deterrent spikes to protect monuments and public buildings, information and awareness-raising actions are also being carried out among citizens.

Paul Arsenio, Mayor of Beja revealed to Lidador Notícias that “on the roofs of the Hospital, some buildings in the Historic Center and in the Santiago Maior School have already placed cages, may also be placed in some condominiums where the pigeon plague is more uncontrolled”, justifying that this phase of the program “will last eight months and has a cost of 14.000 euros, may be extended”, concluded.

Second it was possible to determine, the cages have equipment with water and food to allow the pigeons to survive until the time of collection, then the company responsible eliminates them with carbon dioxide (CO2), are frozen and sent for incineration in a specialized company.

As a result of the storm Danielle that last day 12 of September befell the Alentejo, with a strong incidence in the city of Beja, some buildings in streets near the Escola de Santiago Maior, had the downspouts clogged with droppings and dead pigeons, now with flooding inside them.

It was in April 2006, that several public and private entities in Beja launched an action to capture pigeons in several emblematic buildings in the historic center of the city. At the time, the process was headed by the Civil Government, under the leadership of General Manuel Monge and by the City Council, with Francisco Santos as president, involving six other entities, in an investment that was around 30 thousand euros, and developed over six months.
