Beja: Relive the grandeur of Pax Julia at the “Beja Romana” festival.


The seventh edition of the “Beja Romana” festival will bring to the streets of the historic center of the city, that at the time of Roman rule in the Iberian Peninsula was Pax Julia, the grandeur of that period, with historical recreations, Roman market and shows.

the festival, who returns three years later in the face of the covid-19 pandemic, will have as its central point the Praça da República, where many of the great moments of the Roman era will be recreated, which according to the autarchy “was extremely important for the affirmation of the city”, justify.

Between this Friday and Sunday, the community will “return to the past” and experience the “grandiosity of the Romans”, with the city's central square, where the Roman forum was located and where two temples of Pax Julia are already recognized and identified, one of which is cited as the “most monumental discovered in Portugal”.

The “Fundação de Pax Julia” is the theme of the festival that includes several actions and events that make Beja, a great roman space, with the processions to mark this identity. Today from 10:30 am will be the first big moment with the opening procession, with hundreds of extras that roam the streets of the city, starting from D.Manuel I Secondary School and ending at Praça da República with the “reception of the Roman consul by patricians and plebeians”, where “the decree opening the fair and the edict welcoming the Roman patrician” will be read., the market is now open.

The Church of Mercy, located at the north end of the square, next to the Municipality building, there will be "Domus", a recreation of a roman house, with a live museum and there will be an exhibition.

The Roman Beja, includes a photo contest, based on the city's historical heritage linked to the period and experience of the festival.

To facilitate access to the historic center, the Municipality provides free parking in the Underground Park, located near 300 meters at Praça da República, the nerve center of the festival.
