Castro Verde: Municipality requalifies Igreja dos Remédios.

The renovation work on the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is practically complete (also known as the Church of Chagas do Salvador), in Castro Verde.

Maintenance work included the general painting of the entire monument, roof maintenance and cleaning, namely, replacing broken tiles, waterproofing gutters and downspouts.

This rehabilitation process represented an investment of € 31 250, assumed in a partnership between the Municipal Council of Castro Verde (€ 25.250) and the Union of Parishes of Castro Verde and Casével (€ 6.000), in an action that represents an important contribution to the valorization and maintenance of built heritage. The project was undertaken by the company Sérgio C. Teacher – Pinturas Unipessoal LDA.

The Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church has a medieval foundation and its history intersects with the imagery created around the Battle of Ourique, held in 1139, and whose 885 years are marked this Thursday, 25 July.

The temple was established, according to legend, by vote of D. Afonso Henriques after the victory he achieved over the five Moorish kings. The interior of the church integrates elements from different eras, arising, alongside baroque altars and 17th and 18th century religious imagery, tile panels and screens based on the theme of the Miracle of the Battle of Ourique, performed by Diogo Magina, between 1763 and 1767.
