The São Sebastião Fair takes place 20 January, Saturday, in Castro Verde.
The tradition is repeated 20 January (Saturday), in Rossio do Santo, in Castro Verde. From 08:00, Fair S. Sebastião (or Pau-roxo) animates the path that extends to the Ermida de S. Sebastião.
Clothes, shoes, tissue, trinkets, fruit trees and vegetables, cheeses and sausages are some examples of what you can find at this first fair of the year.
The purple carrot, or “purplewood”, name by which it is commonly known, is also a mandatory presence at this fair.
The traditional purple pau originates from Alentejo and Algarve, where it is still grown and consumed. The tuber is purple on the outside and white on the inside. Considered a real snack in Castro Verde, purple carrots are served raw or cooked, in circles, seasoned with vinegar, in sweet and savory dishes.
