Barrancos was the municipality where the number of inhabitants decreased the most (-21,59%), passing 1.834 in 2011 to 1.438, less 396 population, followed by the municipality of Mértola, which saw the number of inhabitants reduced to 6.205 in 2021 (-14,68%, 1.068 population) and the municipality of Vidigueira, which increased from 5.930 to 5.173 (-12,76%, 757 residents).
Along with these municipalities, which registered a more pronounced population decline, four municipalities in the Beja district recorded a decrease greater than 10%: Moura (-12,59%), Serpa (-11,94%), Cuba (-10,35%) and Ourique (-10,21%).
The municipalities of Almodôvar and Alvito also recorded substantial decreases, -9,89% and -8,95%, respectively.
According to the Census 2021, the municipality of Beja (district capital) lost 6,86% of the population, passing 32.149 inhabitants for 29.944 in a decade, or equivalent to less 2.205 residents.
Contrary to the trend of 13 of 14 municipalities in the district of Beja, in the Municipality of Odemira the number of inhabitants increased 13,32%, passing 26.063 to 29.534 population, registering only less 410 inhabitants than the municipality of Beja.
The Census collection phase 2021 took place between 5 April and 31 of May and the data refer to the date of the census moment, day 19 April 2021.
