Cooperation: Portugal and Spain advance with candidacy for transionic geopark.


The Municipality of Mértola and the Dopation of Huelva, held a meeting where the document was presented and discussed for the creation of the European Territorial Cooperation Agroup (V), that will manage the future transionic geopark between the Guadiana Valley, A Serra de Aracena and Os Picos de Aracena.

This agreement aims to boost the transnational candidacy for the classification of Geopark, involving both the Portuguese municipalities of Mértola, Serpa, Moura e Barrancos, like the Spanish municipalities of the province of Huelva.

The initiative focuses on the valuation strategy of the Guadiana Valley and Serra de Sugho, Focusing on tourist areas, geological and identity of the region. The project aims to transform this territory into a pole of attraction for sustainable tourism, promoting a balanced development and integrated management of the area, with positive impact on transfronical tourism.

The creation of AECT represents a great opportunity to strengthen ties between Portugal and Spain, in environmental appreciation initiatives and promotion of local culture. The bet on geodiversity, associated with the identity and history of the region, It aims to position the transfronic geopark as a European reference in the context of sustainability.

This project is aligned with European territorial cooperation policies and promises to be a regional development model, promoting transionic identity and cooperation between the two countries.
