A EDIA, company that manages the Alqueva dam, obtained a loan from the State to be able to pay the electricity bill.
EDIA – Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva is the largest public customer of electricity and one of the largest consumers nationwide. The company's electricity bill will rise this year to 38 million, a significant aggravation, more than triple the value of 2021.
In view of rising costs, EDIA had to take out a loan, having done so with the State. "In day 26 December 2022 a medium and long-term loan was contracted between EDIA-Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva, S.A. and the Portuguese State in the amount of 13.822.146,00 euros, intended to meet the financing needs of the company, namely to meet the payments of energy expenses”, says in a statement sent to the CMVM.
In other words, were 13,8 million euros that the State lent to EDIA to cover energy costs.
EDIA has an annual consumption of around 250 GW h, or equivalent to about 100 thousand houses, mainly served in high and medium voltage.
The company had a contract with Endesa, of 21 million, and which ended in August for the supply of energy, having made another one with the same electrical 10 million to have electricity by the end of the year. For 2023, EDIA had opened a tender for the supply of electricity, but the company admitted that it could be deserted.
