It is recalled that Alqueva was to ensure the regular supply of water to the areas directly served by the Enterprise and neighboring perimeters during an extremely critical period of climatic point of view, fulfilling its main function associated with the Water Strategic Reserve, differentiator from other existing irrigation perimeters.

Today Alqueva has a usable water reserve of about 1850 million cubic meters (58% the useful capacity of the reservoir or 69% of the total capacity), in other words, if the scenario is similar to the last three years, with extremely low inflows to Alqueva, the stored water will be enough to ensure its regular distribution for another three years of drought.
