EDIA's negative results were four times higher in 2023 the previous year. Increased energy prices and network repairs weighed on the Alqueva management company’s accounts.
The public company EDIA had a loss of 40,037 million in 2023, almost four times more than the previous year (10,53 million). According to the accounts of the Alqueva manager, published not site of the Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the price of electricity, as well as changes in the concession contract for the secondary network of the Alqueva Multipurpose Enterprise contributed to the company's negative results.
“If in 2021 the average active energy price supported by the company was 47,6 EUR/MWh, in 2022 passed to 136,2 EUR/MWh e 2023 even increased to 196 EUR/MWh”, says José Pedro Salema, President of the Board of Directors of EDIA, in the report and accounts, which recognizes that the net result “worsened substantially”.
The company's turnover rose 12% last year, to 43,408 million, but expenses with “external supplies and services rose 25%”, to 50 million, due “essentially due to the high amount of electricity consumed (237 GWh)", continues Salema.
Also weighing on EDIA's accounts was “the concession contract for the EFMA secondary network [Multi-Purpose Development in Alqueva], granting the company the rights and obligations to operate these infrastructures for a period of 20 years". The concession term was seven years. The change resulted in an increase in 22 million euros of provision.
A empresa, whose shareholder is the General Directorate of Treasury and Finance, hired more 12 workers in 2023, “mostly with functions in the area of exploitation of the enterprise”, for a total of 191. However, EDIA anticipates “additional reinforcements” given the “increase in the irrigated area”.
Remember that since December last year, the Alqueva manager asks 22 million to the State and increases capital by 41 million.
