It takes place today, by 21:00 hours, in the auditorium of edia, in Beja, the conference "The territory of Beja in the Middle Ages: landscape and settlement", by Professor Hermenegildo Fernandes.
this conference, free entry, is part of the cycle “Land and Landscapes in the South”, which results from a partnership between EDIA, the Municipality of Beja and the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo.
This new cycle intends, summoning history, anthropology, agronomy, economics and several other areas of knowledge, help to understand how the Alentejo landscape was defined and its people shaped.
This conference is intended to address issues associated with the land structure, exploration models, cultures and territory organization during the Islamic and medieval Christian period.
The ways of survival and transformation of Roman land structures will be addressed, first during the Islamic period and later through the great land re-colonization movement resulting from the Christian conquest.
At issue is, on the one hand, the evolution of villa, the emergence of the binomial hisn/alcaria on the outskirts of the territory, as well as exploration units that will lead to the creation of a new settlement network (the villages); for another, the successive transformations in the system of cultures, determined by cultural choices and different approaches to the territory (for example, the impact of vine cultivation or the varying prevalence of cereal and livestock).
the guest lecturer, Hermenegildo Fernandes, is a professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon (FLUL), where he also got his doctorate. He was director of the History Center of that University and is currently director of the History Area at FLUL.
Born in Lisbon is, however, from Beja, fact that has marked his path of investigation.
