(Exclusive) Beja: List of candidates for director of the Queen D. Leonor Museum released.


Santiago Macias and José António Falcão are on the list of twelve candidates for the post of director of the Rainha D. Leonor Museum, in Beja. The list was released today by the Alentejo Regional Culture Directorate.

Or historian Santiago Matias, researcher at the Mértola Archaeological Field and Mayor of Moura between 2013 and 2017, is one of twelve candidates admitted to the competition for director of the Rainha D. Leonor Museum, in Beja. Natural of Moura, Santiago Macias is also part of the final list of eight candidates (list of national pantheon) the director of the National Pantheon, in Lisbon, competition promoted by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC).

Also historian and architect José António Falcão, former director of the Department of Historical and Artistic Heritage of the Diocese of Beja is another candidate, also competing (listoff_museum nfmcenáculo) to the post of director of the National Museum Frei Manuel do Cenáculo, Evora, DGPC responsibility procedure.

A list (lista_candid_museu_beja20) of candidates admitted and excluded from the international competition promoted by the Regional Directorate for Culture of Alentejo (DRCA) was published this Tuesday on that institution's website after the respective notice was published today in Diário da República.

The jury chaired by Ana Paula Amendoeira, maximum responsible of the DRCA, selected 12 candidates, including 7 women and five men, who will still be subject to a professional interview, final moment of the contest. Of total competitors, three candidates were excluded for not having delivered all the documentation required in the tender procedure.

The competition for director of the Rainha D. Leonor Regional Museum was launched in 2 July. For a service commission, for a period of three. The last director was José Carlos Oliveira, who left office more than three years ago, first because of medical discharge and then because he retired, the position having been held on an interim basis by Francisco Paixão.

With the move to the Regional Direction of Culture of Alentejo (DRCAlen), management became the responsibility of Deolinda Tavares, also a candidate for the post of director.

Ministry of Culture museum network

From 1 December 2019, that the Regional Museum of Beja is no longer managed by the Intermunicipal Community of Baixo Alentejo (CIMB) and became part of the museum network of the Ministry of Culture, involving a partnership to be established between the Regional Directorate for Culture of Alentejo (DRCAlen), shared management with the local council.

Under decree-law no. 78/2019, of 5 June, approving the legal regime for museum management, monuments and palaces, the Rainha Dona Leonor Regional Museum, in Beja, was transferred from the Intermunicipal Community of Baixo Alentejo (Cimbal) for the Regional Directorate for Culture (DRC) do Alentejo.

Installed no N convent. Sra. da Conceição, State property, the museum has a vast and valuable collection, ranging from prehistory to the present, highlighting its archeology collections, painting, tilework, pottery, jewelery, sculpture, numismatics, metrology and hardware. Here the “Portuguese Letters” were written, by Soror Mariana Alcoforado who got lost in love with Noel de Chamilly, a French army captain, whose passion was not matched by the Gallic military.
