Garvão: ACT must intervene in the situation of the Continuing Care Unit.

Mayor of Ourique went to talk to the workers of the institution who are connected to Futuro de Garvão and not the management company. The closure eliminated “30 beds” and will extinguish “40 jobs”.

The closure of the Garvão Continuing Care Unit (UCCG) closed due to insolvency/bankruptcy of the owner company, leading to the elimination of 30 beds and transfer of users and extinguished 40 work posts. The end of the fiscal year of the owner company Fiel Santos Cardoso, Unipessoal Lda, took place last day 31 of December.

The first complaint had been made by the former deputy and candidate for a new term, João Dias, nurse by profession, who revealed on Monday that the UCCG would close, having been supported by the National Care Association, which in a statement reaffirmed “the bankruptcy and consequent closure” of that unit.

During the day of Wednesday, several fire brigades in the region transferred users to other Continuing Care Units in Serpa, Mértola, Odemira (district of Beja), Santiago do Cacém, Grândola (Setúbal district), Montemor-o-Novo, Portel (District of Évora), Ponte de Sor, Elvas and Alter do Chão (District of Portalegre).

How many workers await the visit of the Authority for Working Conditions, which should take place next week, with a view to initiating a process that could lead to the suspension of employment contracts and their placement in the unemployment fund.

The Mayor of Ourique, was yesterday (Thursday) meeting with the workers to “leave the support and solidarity of the municipality and help in what is within the reach of the municipality”, Marcelo Guerreiro confessed to Lidador Notícias (LN) his disillusionment because “those who suffer the consequences of a catastrophic management are the same culprits, the workers", concluded. According to our newspaper, the employees belonged to the Associação Futuro de Garvão, whose management was dismembered in the face of serious financial problems, being managed by new owners.

The UCCG started operating in 14 May 2012, managed by Futuro de Garvão-Association of Social Solidarity, having been inaugurated in mid-December of that year, by the then Deputy Secretary of State to the Prime Minister Passos Coelho and mayor of Lisbon, Carlos coins. At stake is an investment of more than one million euros, that being over 722 thousand, were supported by the Regional Health Administration and by private funds.

In 28 February 2020 the deed for the acquisition of the continued care unit from Futuro de Garvão was made by the young doctor Miguel Fiel Cardoso and it was following this purchase that a diversion of money was discovered in the institution, in an amount greater than 100 thousand euros. fearing discovery, a director and the woman who was an employee of the institution, accompanied by an attorney, assumed responsibility for the deviation.

at the time of business, Miguel Cardoso said he knew that the institution had “serious financial problems, but do not imagine this outcome”, added that “we bought the building and rented the spaces to Futuro, which manages the services providing services”. A legal and management imbroglio that ends in the worst way for workers.

LN tried to contact those responsible for the association and Miguel Cardoso's company, but without success.

Through the Assembly of the Republic João «Dias, PCP deputy in the last legislature, questioned the government, through the Ministry of Labor and Social Solidarity on the measures that “would be taken and whether the Executive is available to take over the public management of the institution and what intervention will ACT have to ensure workers’ rights”.

Through the Ministry of Health, João Dias wants to know what measures will be taken for “the reopening of the Unit and if he agrees with the sale of the building financed with public money and fixed to pay a rent financed by the State”.
