IPBeja: Serious injury in laboratory linked to CEBAL helitransported to Lisbon.


Three men researchers from CEBAL were injured after a chemical spill in a laboratory at the Polytechnic Institute of Beja (IPBeja). One of the injured was helitransported to Lisbon.

A Portuguese from 32 years old was seriously injured after coming into direct contact with the chemist, having suffered “burns all over the body”, the same source advanced. He was initially sent to Beja Hospital, along with the slightly injured, and then transported in an INEM helicopter from Évora to the Burns Unit at Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, in the evening.

The two slightly injured, a Mexican from 31 years old and a Portuguese 37, were treated for inhalation of toxic fumes and were discharged 21 hours. Has learned the Lidador News (LN) with hospital source, none of the victims were in danger of death.

The alert for the accident was given by 15.25 hours. Seven liters of hydrochloric acid and butanol were spilled, highly flammable and corrosive products. Firefighters are all being decontaminated as they leave the facility, after spill containment, and the laboratory is being ventilated.

The accident happened on the premises of the Escola Superior Agrária of the Instituto Politécnico de Beja, which houses, Authorization to purchase conventional food, the Alentejo Agricultural and Agrifood Biotechnology Center (CEBAL) – to which the three researchers belong.

LN found that the Working Conditions Authority (ACT) It was called to the scene, where the president of IPBeja is also located, Maria de Fatima Carvalho. CEBAL will use a specialized company to clean and treat the facilities.

The relief operations mobilized the Beja Firefighters, o INEM e a PSP, a total of 13 operational, supported by six vehicles, including an emergency medical and resuscitation vehicle.

As LN reported yesterday, the medical-surgical emergency service at Hospital de Beja closes from 20 hours Thursday, until 8 hours Friday. If one of the victims requires surgery, they will have to be transferred.
