The bacterium ‘legionella’ was detected in bathrooms and other facilities at Beja and Cuba railway stations, which were temporarily closed as a precaution, revealed the public company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).
The IP indicated that ‘legionella’ was detected’ in “some places with default values”, at Beja and Cuba stations (district of Beja), within the scope of actions promoted by the company to control the bacteria.
Noting that they were “all necessary actions taken to promote the health of employees and users”, IP stated that “water supply was suspended and the use of sanitary facilities was banned, showers and pantries in the same locations, providing alternatives, when necessary”.
“Simultaneously, all cleaning and disinfection measures are being taken, in accordance with the established procedures”, said the company, highlighting that he is not aware of any infected employee.
The restrictions implemented, he added, will be raised “as soon as the cycle of new analyzes is completed and with results that confirm the absence of the bacteria”.
The bacterium ‘legionella’ is responsible for Legionnaires' disease, a form of severe pneumonia that usually begins with a dry cough, fever, goosebumps, Headache, muscle pain and difficulty breathing, abdominal pain and diarrhea may also appear.
Can be contracted by air (respiratory), through inhalation of water droplets or by aspiration of contaminated water, the infection, despite being serious, has effective treatment.
