Mértola: Presented Biological Station. investment of 3 million.


The Municipality of Mértola, in collaboration with other institutions made the presentation of the Biological Station of Mértola, which will be a center of recovery and technology transfer, project that has an investment in excess of three million euros, with funding from the Alentejo 2020.

At the opening session was attended by Jorge Rosa, Mayor, Pedro Rodrigues, Vice-rector of the University of Porto, Nuno Ferrand, Scientific Coordinator of CIBIO-InBio the University of Porto, Jorge Pulido Valente and, Vice president of CCDRA. The ceremony was attended by nearly a hundred representatives of various local institutions, regional and national.

The investment in this project exceeds EUR three million, with funding from the Alentejo 2020, in which they are included the rehabilitation of the building to its new features, namely the Biological Station, with their valences for scientific studies, the museum center Biodiversity Gallery, where you can learn more about the region and the ecosystems of the Guadiana Valley and Lower Alentejo, and also an area dedicated to house the reserves Mértola Museum and the Municipal Archives.

This is a project that will be physically located in Mértola, with their purposes beyond the territorial limits of the county, the region and even from Portugal, having already awakened interest in various European universities.

In Mértola the scientific study, the connection to the universities and the development of the territory continue to be united, a biodiversity conservation path, the promotion of agro-ecology and combating climate change. With the station also plans to train the business sector and to promote the attraction and retention of qualified technical staff in the territory.

The huge rehabilitation program building of the old silos and warehouses was lodged by ANC architects, a project that will respect the integrity of the complex and provide it with all the valences that their new functions need.
