Mértola: Municipality promotes “EXPO Geodiversity of the São Domingos region”.


The National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, in collaboration with the Municipality of Mértola and Serrão Martins Foundation, It presents next Friday, in Santo Domingo Garden, one rock exposure, dedicated to the geodiversity of Mértola and São Domingos.

MÃ ‰ RTOLAOn the show are contemplated the main geological formations of the South Zone Portuguese, highlighting the Iberian Pyrite Belt and the Pulo do Lobo antiform. In this context, wide geodiversity, volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the upper Paleozoic age dot the landscape, the plains, we relay, in the valleys of the rivers and the Guadiana rivers and Chança and still in the mines of São Domingos and Chança.

The geo-diversity of this area of ​​Alentejo, It is thus represented by a collection of rocks, organized by LNEG, from places like Mértola, Saint Domingos, Monte Alto, Willows and Court Pinto. It is also stresses the importance of the geological resources in the economic development of the county Mértola, through the exploration of massive sulphide ores (pirites), iron oxides and manganese, copper lodes, lead and barium, and the use of geological materials in construction, such as shale and greywacke.
