Mértola: Azenhas do Guadiana, praia fluvial, Yes or No.

The movement “United for Mértola and for People” defends the creation of a river beach in Azenhas do Guadiana. Jorge Rosa, Speaker of the House, states that “it is a space with history, that should not be artificialized". About the movement, the mayor says it is "without imagination and deceiving".

On Saturday the United for Mértola and People Movement, she listened to the local population that usually frequents the Azenhas do Guadiana area and the many tourists who look for her about what is necessary to do in that fantastic natural space, to create better conditions for usufruct and security and, simultaneously, preserve environmental values, "concluded that it is necessary to create a River Beach, complying with all the standards provided for in national and community legislation".

According to the movement “prior to this initiative to collect opinions and suggestions from users, the Movement spoke with the landowners to analyze and take into account the private projects planned for the annexed areas”.

“Many of the local stakeholders expressed their displeasure at the lack of attention paid by the City Council to this tourist and leisure area., which is increasingly sought after by the local population and visitors. The result of this hearing of the population will be disclosed in due course and integrated into the program that the Movement will present in the next municipal elections", justified the United for Mértola and for the People movement.

Urged to comment on the movement's statements, Jorge Rosa, Mayor of Mértola said that: “about the Requalification of the Watermills of Guadiana, there is a project being carried out by the municipality for the requalification of the entire riverfront, including this area of Azenhas do Guadiana, which has been successively improved. This space has always been used by the people of Mertole as a place of leisure and baths, but also as water mills and fishing grounds. It's a place with great history., that deserves to be preserved, with quality, and not artificialized with infrastructures that are now in fashion, but that take away natural value, biodiversity, and massify the places in an unsustainable way”.

The mayor from Mertole leaves strong criticisms of the movement that he says is "without imagination and deceit".

“In relation to the United for Mértola Movement, say it's an unimaginative and misleading move, insofar as the suggestions that are presented, are "copied" from the work being developed by the municipality., since almost everyone is an employee and obviously knows the processes, they suggest and become owners of ideas and projects that are not theirs. They did this, for example, when we launched the 2nd phase of the business support program, did it now, and have done more often, just look at their publications", Jorge Rosa's accusations, President of the Chamber Mértola.
