Mértola: Heavy rain spills over Guadiana river.

The heavy rain that has been falling over the past, in particular during this Friday, it raised the flow of the Guadiana River that overflowed the banks and almost submerged the Mértola pier.

Despite not causing damage to the Chamber of Mértola and the companies that own vessels intended for river trips in the “Grande Rio do Sul”, were moved to the mouth of the Oeiras River, which is about 200 meters below the main anchorage of the Alentejo village.

To better understand the precipitation that fell in the region, pass through Pulo do Lobo, the biggest waterfall in the south of Portugal, with a waterfall with about 20 meters high, in 24 hours the flow of the Guadiana River, He went from 27,21 to 103,81 cubic meters per second.

From 5 April 2013 after heavy rains and discharges from the dams that the flow of the Guadiana did not pass the margins and flooded several areas of the municipality. The old mining port of Pomarão was submerged, several recreational boats anchored there suffered damage and the village restaurant was flooded and had to close doors.

According to Civil Protection source, in the district of Beja the rain caused 14 floods in the municipalities of Moura, Vidigueira, Beja, Serpa. Almodôvar and Mértola.

The collapse of the roof of a house in the city of Moura did not cause victims, since the housing was not inhabited. There were roads cut for a while in the face of the water tables that formed on some highways.
