This is a conference that aims to be the first step in a process of building solutions that allow agricultural holdings in these regions to respond to the climate situation., that will take place today, in Mértola.
The Guadiana Agricultural Cooperative and the Alentejano Pig Breeders Association, in conjunction with the Portuguese Association of Agrarian Economy, INIAV and the Order of Engineers are part of the organization of the conference “The dryland and the water – a debate about the future of extensive systems in the South”, that will take place today, in Mértola.
The motivation for this organization comes after practically a decade of dry years, in which extensive agricultural systems in the south of Baixo Alentejo – mainly rainfed systems – face, in the short term, serious viability problems, may compromise, in the relatively near future, its continuity.
The harmful potential that this situation holds, not only for these agricultural systems, but also for the territories in which they are established, advises deep reflection on the main dimensions of the problem and possible solutions, from agronomic to hydrological, passing through social, economic and territorial, up to – and with particular emphasis – agricultural policy.
This conference aims to be the first step in a process of building solutions that allow agricultural holdings in these regions to respond to the current climate situation., maintaining a productive fabric that, in addition to the economic function, contribute to the social and territorial structuring of this significant slice of the national territory.
