Mértola and Odemira: Both winners as "Municipality More Blue 2017"
Municipalities of Mértola and Odemira were awarded the prize "City More Blue 2017", promoted by Blue Flag Association of Europe and the Portuguese Environment Agency.
The prize, delivered last day 24 November, in Vilamoura, the VI National Seminar Program Blue Flag, distinguishes municipalities, nationally, for their commitment in activities related to environmental education during the bathing season.
To carry out the environmental education activities, framed in the Blue Flag program, the City Council with the collaboration of several entities, namely the Office of the Child (Holy House of Mercy of Mértola), Train project +, Senior University of Mértola and Delegation of the Portuguese League Against Cancer Mértola.
ODEMIRA distinguished as MUNICIPALITY MORE BLUE
The title of "County More Blue" was awarded in 2017 Odemira and Mértola (Alentejo), the Port (North), Cantanhede and Aveiro (Center), Horta (Azores), Vila Real de Santo António (Algarve), Lourinhã (Tejo) and Funchal (Madeira).
The prizes were awarded at the National Blue Flag Seminar, which took place on 23 and 24 November, in Vilamoura.
The Municipality of Odemira also received the Certified International 10 years of consecutive membership of the Blue Flag program, assigned to the Carvalhal beaches, Furnas and Zambujeira do Mar. These international licenses are allocated to make up 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 consecutive years of joining the program and are a way of recognizing the work done by municipalities in bathing areas with the Blue Flag distinction.
The Blue Flag is, above all, an environmental education program and as such the development of environmental education is an essential criterion for all promoters. The evaluation of environmental education is the responsibility of the Department of Environmental Communication and Citizenship Portuguese Environment Agency.
The Blue Flag is awarded annually to beaches and marinas that meet a set of water quality criteria, environmental management and equipment, security and services, information and environmental education.
