Archeology in Construction: archaeological works in the Iron Age necropolis of Largo do Terreiro da Feira.
run from the past day 17 August, archaeological excavation works in the Iron Age necropolis located in Largo do Terreiro da Feira. This intervention was part of a research project funded by the FCT, titled The Lower and Middle Guadiana (séculi VIII a.C. – I d.C.): Paths of a border, whose main objective is to analyze the population of this area during the indicated period.
The archaeological excavation is part of a Campo Escola project, financed by the Municipality of Mértola, in which undergraduate students participate, Master's and PhD at the University of Seville, the project being managed by Francisco Correia and directed by archaeologists Lúcia Miguel and Pedro Albuquerque.
The objective of this campaign is to expand the excavations to one of the sectors of the necropolis and, at the same time, promote the dissemination of the current state of knowledge of the settlement of Mértola and its territory between the Iron Age and the first centuries of the Roman presence.
The holding of four lectures in the days 17, 19, 24 and 26 August were part of this outreach program., as well as training for students who participated in this initiative.. This occasion made it possible to raise awareness of the main issues that the existence of a burial space of these characteristics poses., as well as the importance of valuing the border heritage in the current context.
