The Municipality of Mértola, in the last decades, has sought to improve the efficiency and quality of water supply and wastewater treatment services in various locations in the municipality, also promoting the urban requalification of the same.
From 2016, the municipality has submitted applications for the Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources Operational Program (SETTER) 2014-2020, having managed to obtain approval from 7 operations, total eligible investment of 2.256. 750,00 €, with financing approved by the Cohesion Fund of 1.988.886,00 €.
As 7 operations, carried out through 4 public works contracts between 2016 and 2021, total an investment of 3.221. 776,00 €. The Mértola City Council has received to date 1. 764.199,00 € from the Cohesion Fund – or represents 55% of the total investment made in the requalification of the villages and supply and sanitation infrastructures of Alcaria Longa, João Serra, Montes Altos and Picoitos.
Each project included the implementation of a water supply system ( 2 autonomous systems and 2 systems linked to AGDA's trending system), an autonomous wastewater treatment system (4 autonomous systems) and, yet, the requalification of the streets of the 4 locations, improving mobility and security of citizens.
These investments represent a significant step in improving the quality of life of citizens who live in or visit the localities of the municipality of Mértola, and are revealing marks of the commitment of Mértola City Council and the European Union to sustainability and, of course, with the well-being of local communities.
