This second phase of the project was part of an application to the planned EU funds for the period 2014-2020 (POCTEP / INTERREG V-Spain-Portugal).
s conditions of navigability of the river began to deteriorate from the mid- 1960, after the closure of mines S. Sundays, in the Mértola municipality. Until then, and since the late nineteenth century, the river had been an authentic "highway" river, traveled by hundreds of ships carrying ore to the port of Vila Real de Santo António.
