Mértola: population contributed with 15 thousand euros for the purchase of a fire engine.


The Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firemen of Mértola (AHBVM) received a Light Fire Fighting Vehicle (WOLVES), whose acquisition had a cost of 46.600 euros and had the financial contribution of the population of the county, beyond the town hall.

When last May you ordered the vehicle for further transformation, the management of AHBVM launched a fundraising campaign called “Equipar para succor”, had as a priority to rebalance the car park, since the two vehicles of the type that the corporation has are 1990 and 2002, with many kilometers in your asset.

The solidarity of the population resulted in the entry of 15.000 euros in the coffers of the institution that benefited from a subsidy from the Câmara de Mértola de 10.000 euros having the rest 21.600 euros secured by AHBVM.

Jorge Santos, Commander of the Mértola Fire Department, considered that it is “an essential vehicle for the first intervention in forest fires and occurrences in the narrow streets of the Historic Center of the village”, justified.

When the campaign was launched, the corporation debuted an Iberlinx during the Islamic Festival (Iberian lynx), whose cost of 40.200 euros was fully supported by the Municipality. In question is a small multipurpose vehicle, that in addition to fighting fires inside the village, against its three places, it allows to carry out aid and transport a patient or person with reduced mobility to an ambulance that does not access the Historic Center.

The corporation's next objective is to create a Diving Team, to respond to events on the Guadiana River, since from the first week of 2023, three operators will attend a course at the Diving School in Porto Covo (Sines).

“The corporation is going through a good moment in its history in terms of operational and managerial assets”, sustained Jorge Santos. The Command and Active Corps of Mértola Firefighters is made up of 48 operational and 7 Trainees, counting on 22 Car, one of which is equipped with a rescue boat.
