Mértola: President of the Municipality at the launch of the “Science Comes to Town” candidacy.

Mario Thomas, Mayor of Mértola, participated in the presentation of the “Science Comes to Town” candidacy, which took place at the Knowledge Pavilion, in Lisbon.

This European project aims to take science to several cities in the country and Europe throughout the year 2026.

In a symbolic gesture, the President of the Municipal Chamber of Mértola, together with other mayors, marked their support for the candidacy on the map of Portugal.

This event kicks off a scientific marathon that promises to transform 2026 in a remarkable year for science, encompassing 26 neighborhoods in Lisbon, 26 cities and towns in Portugal, and 26 cities and towns in 26 Member States of the European Union.

Inspired by the success of the European Science City in 2022, the European Commission and Ciência Viva are planning a wide range of activities to promote scientific and technological culture across the continent. This effort also celebrates the 30th anniversary of Ciência Viva, reaffirming the commitment to making science accessible and participatory for all.

During your intervention, Mário Tomé highlighted the importance of this program for the future of science and the involvement of society. This event marked the beginning of an ambitious project that culminates in 2026, uniting curious minds passionate about science across Europe. Mértola, once again, is on the front line, actively participating in this European project.
