Mértola: Everything ready for the 10th Islamic Festival, which runs from 16 a 19 May.


Of 16 a 19 May the Islamic Festival is back in Mértola. The assembly of Souk (street market) in the Historic Center streets has begun.

Coming soon, colored cloths and reeds give shelter to goods and people, doing all this space the true heart of the Festival.

The stage preparation that precede the day of the event are always special moments for residents of Mértola, that in this way can see the Islamic Festival to life and get involved in the whole process. No less astonished are the tourists with the bustle in the narrow streets of the old village.

The first impact when the visitor reach the Islamic Festival is with art and architecture. As decorative elements are the source and water, elements very close to Muslim culture, and the wall, an element Mértola.

To the source, artists inspired in Chefchaouen, Morocco, and the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The wall is entirely devoted to our heritage, It is planning one of the carvings that are on display at the Museum of Mértola.

To beyond these, we have in this area over two decorative notes which are the gateways, one main and another further back in place of the old port Beja, that marked entry into the walled area.

The decor of the Festival spaces is a work of many hands, they all employees of the Municipality of Mértola.

For the tenth edition of the biggest event of the county, the City Council has prepared an immense cultural program, We want to once again strengthen the bonds of Islamic heritage and cultural identity that links all the Mediterranean countries. Concertos, exhibitions, music, Offices, conferences are some of the proposals for an extensive program which is now available in www.cm-mertola.pt
